The project – a daunting task – was completed in five different construction phases. The goal was to refurbish six listed buildings for the city’s oldest wine merchant to create a fluid, contemporary working space. The use of natural materials, in particular oak, is very significant. Wooden panel and boiserie have been brought back to their original state, highlighted – here and there – by sage wall finishes while artificial lighting has been replaced with a mix of brass suspension lamps and LED lighting in a nod to energy efficient, sustainable planning.
Within these spaces, high-quality, long lasting furniture such as upholstered CH20 Elbow Chairs by Hans J. Wegner have been adopted.
Each detail is accentuated by the amount of light the original expansive windows let in. On the other hand, windows have also been fitted with soft fabric blinds to diffuse light on sunny days and reduce glare. Rooms were brought back to their original proportions to create collaborative, open-plan working spaces while fireplaces have been upgraded keeping their old marble mantels intact.
Mowat & Company:
“Bringing new life to old spaces is a complex juggling act. As the architect you need to be sensitive to history and ambitious about the future. You need to keep your eyes peeled and imagination alert for unexpected opportunities hidden away from view.”
