Within the past few years, Brøchner Hotels has opened a number of boutique hotels in central Copenhagen, all located in centuries-old buildings, which the small hotel chain has carefully restored, preserving interesting building characteristics. The hotels are characterized by exquisite and individually designed interiors, high levels of personal service and an atmosphere which appeals to tourists as well as locals.
Hotel Danmark, on the doorstep of Copenhagen City Hall and the city's most important museums – the area is known as the museum district – opened in May 2017 and is the latest addition to the chain of hotels.
The hotel has 89 rooms in two buildings dating from 1792 and 1969, respectively. As part of the extensive renovation project, the hotel's façade has been clad with racing green, glazed tiles which, combined with an inviting outdoor café and planting, make you stop and want to go inside.
At Brøchner Hotels, guests do not check in at traditional reception desks, but in lobby bars. A detail which immediately sets the tone for an informal atmosphere. In Hotel Danmark, the lobby bar is a rectangular, intimate space with black, ceramic floor tiles with white flecks.
A warm atmosphere is achieved thanks to the slatted walls and the built-in bookcase made of red-stained oak and a large brass bar. Guests can relax in Kaare Klint's beautiful Addition Sofa from 1933 – the hotel opted for navy blue leather, the sofa's debut in this color, which is both subtle and sophisticated. A long table and black-lacquered CH23 chairs designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950 offer a pleasant place to work.
The conference room on the first floor exudes discreet elegance: The walls, ceiling and conference table are black, while the carpet is dark gray. The room's only colored elements are the top rails made of smoked oak on the CH88 chairs, which have black powder-coated frames and black leather seats.
When designing the interior of the building, the design team was inspired by the nearby Thorvaldsen's Museum, designed by architect Gotlieb Bindesbøll and opened in 1848 as a museum for works of sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Colors from the museum, including ultramarine, Pompeian red, burnt sienna and Schjerning green have been used for corridor ceilings, walls and the specially designed rug. The result is beautiful and transforms the secondary rooms into a special universe.
Søren Brøchner-Mortensen, Director of Business Development, Brøchner Hotels, about the choice of Carl Hansen & Søn furniture:
"Carl Hansen & Søn's top-of-the-range designer furniture adds to the perception of quality in our hotels. We do not use the furniture everywhere. By mixing them with other furniture pieces, we create a more homely atmosphere. It is easier to use the chairs and sofas actively – people are not afraid to sit down!
Our collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn actually dates back several years. For Hotel SP34, we were the very first to buy and use Wegner's beautiful CH88 – which today is our signature chair – something which gives us a special affiliation with the business."
