There is no other building in the world quite like The Bunker. Constructed in 1943, this imposing structure was first an air raid shelter, then a Russian prison and a storage facility for tropical fruits, and, in the 1990s, the site of illegal raves. Today, The Bunker has been repurposed to serve as the private home of Karen and Christian Boros, but it also hosts The Boros Foundation – one of Berlin’s most exclusive contemporary art collections. In order to house and display the pieces, commissioned architects carved 3.000 square meters of exhibition space out of the reinforced steel behemoth. The labyrinthine museum encapsulates some 850 works by contemporary artists such as Ai Weiwei and Olafur Eliasson.

The penthouse on the building’s top floor is the private space that Karen and Christian call home. With views overlooking Berlin, the interiors are filled with warm colors and natural materials; the earth tones, hardwood floors, fur and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that define the cozy living space stand in stark contrast to the stern concrete walls. Included in the couple’s sitting room is Hans J. Wegner’s CH22 lounge chair, a piece of furniture that Christian describes as, “very special” to both him and Karen. “My wife and I like the tension of this chair,” he says, “it is a sincere and simple design that doesn’t aim to be an extravagant piece of seating sculpture; it looks nonchalant and, yet, it’s so comfortable that it basically invites you to come and sit down in it.”
