By the time he designed the BM0057 Sideboard in 1957, Børge Mogensen already had a broad understanding of the way modern living standards were evolving. Playing a key role in the revolution of utilitarian furniture, his ‘building furniture’ concept explored the idea of introducing purpose-built storage that adapted to changing needs and spaces. From the results of extensive research, which investigated the ideal proportions for shelves and drawers, he designed a variety of modern storage solutions. Allowing the materials to speak for themselves, there are few decorative flourishes, save for striking brass brackets with screw slots that face inwards to form a simple, symmetrical pattern. Designed with enough space to hold a 12-piece dining set, bi-folding doors open out to reveal two adjustable shelves, drawers featuring mortise joints and side panels that taper at the top for a slim-line finish. Slender legs, that are a seamless part of a solid oak frame, lift the sideboard off the ground giving it a lightness that does not detract from the space around it. Beautiful from every angle, the BM0057 Sideboard is assembled by hand, an exacting process that is required due to the nature of its tenon and bevelled joints, double brackets, and doors. Blending Mogensen’s calm simplicity with elegant functionality, the sideboard is a classic example of exquisite craftsmanship and practical perfectionism that supports everyday living.
