Paper cord
Materials
At Carl Hansen & Søn, we prioritize sustainable materials in our furniture production. Our paper cord, available in natural, black, and white, is FSC™-certified (FSC C135991). We use unbleached paper for our natural cord, while the black and white cords are dyed and bleached, respectively.
The paper cord also known as Danish paper cord, also known as woven paper cord, is a traditional material used in Scandinavian furniture design. It is made by tightly twisting long, thin strips of paper together to create a durable and flexible cord that can be used for seating, armrests, and other furniture applications. This technique was first introduced in the early 20th century as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive materials like leather and upholstery fabric. Today, the Danish paper cord is still highly valued for its strength, comfort, and eco-friendliness. It is also a signature element of Carl Hansen & Søn's furniture, which has helped to popularize this material across the globe.
