PATRICIA PERALES GARCIA

The Copenhagen-based Spanish artist Patricia Perales García crosses the practices of textile design and ceramics with unique works reflecting mental landscapes. After studying and living for several years in both Florence and London, García parts her work between Copenhagen and the small Danish island of Glænø. Her relationship with Kaare Klints furniture designs is rooted in a pair of sun-bleached Safari Chairs that belonged to the grandmother of her Danish husband.

"Color and composition are two of the pillars when starting a new work, along with the thoughts and feelings I had prior to the process of developing each piece. I see my works as a walk through my internal life and mental landscape. They are all independent characters that unfold and bring meaning to one another."

"We have two Kaare Klint safari chairs in a beautiful green that have been bleached by the sun throughout the years in the summerhouse. They were bought by my husband’s grandmother a long time ago. She is no longer here but I know of Kaare Klint through her, and I find there is something beautiful in the possibility of getting to know someone across time this way."

HOW HAS YOUR MULTIGEOGRAPHIC BACKGROUND AFFECTED YOUR ARTISTIC PRACTICE?

 

I grew up in a small town in Northern Spain. After studying costume design in Florence, I lived in London for seven years where I developed my artistic practice. About three years ago I moved to Denmark, and I work between Copenhagen and Glænø, a small island in South Zealand. 

Reflecting on it, I can see how specially Copenhagen’s architecture and the city as a landscape have influenced my practice in terms of volume, proportion, and spatiality

 

WIHICH PROJECTS DO YOU CURRENTLY WORK ON? 

 

At the moment I am working on a group of reliefs made with clay, textile and color. They are made with an instinctive rhythm and their different components create a whole by assembling each individual element into a unity. The cut outs of fabric have been used either in their purest form, or painted with casein or oil pastels. I have been finding interest and pleasure in the process of making my own colors. Casein paint has a laborious process being made from powder pigments and I apply it in fine layers to give it a chalky and mat finish. On the contrary, oil pastels, allow me to work more freely as in a sketch.

 

WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED WORK BY KAARE KLINT?

 

I would say the ‘Kirkestol’ is my favorite because of its unpretentiousness and austerity. Its humble materials and form remind me of the classic Spanish chair in a countryside home.
