MIKAEL ANDERSEN
Since 1989, gallerist Mikael Andersen has showcased emerging and established contemporary artists through the Copenhagen-based Galerie Mikael Andersen. In addition to his love for art, Andersen has also been a dedicated private collector of Kaare Klint furniture for more than 35 years – praising the simplicity and compositions of Klint’s design. At home, his classic, hand-picked furniture complement the ever-changing and impressive collection of modern art.
"I find it exciting to mix classic furniture with contemporary art. When I started my gallery, there wasn't the same interest in contemporary art as there is today. I experienced that customers and collectors have responded positively when seeing contemporary art put together with classic furniture and how the two elevate each other."
"I don't have a favorite piece of furniture, but I enjoy reading in my Mix Chair in the red living room, where there is the perfect lighting."
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN COLLABORATING WITH NEW ARTISTS?
Every day, I love going to work at my gallery in Bredgade, which I have done for the past 34 years. There are new challenges daily; no two days are alike when working with art and artists. When searching for new and upcoming artists, I naturally look at their practice and their expression. Although, it's just as much about whether it's a person you can build a good relationship with and collaborate with in the future.
Most often, the artworks that move into my apartment are works that have been showcased in my gallery by artists I work with. For this reason, the art in my home also represents friendships. Sometimes artworks move out again. I never have trouble passing artwork on, if I know it will move into a good home. However, there are works that I have regretted letting go, but nothing is static, and you can’t own everything forever.
YOU HAVE BEEN COLLECTING KAARE KLINT'S FURNITURE FOR MORE THAN 35 YEARS - HOW DID YOUR COLLECTION BEGIN?
My collecting of Kaare Klint furniture started with the Faaborg chair when I saw it at the Faaborg Art Museum many years ago. Afterward, I went to Rudolph Rasmussen Carpentry and looked at their model of the Faaborg chair, which I ended up buying. It was my first chair, and since then, more chairs and sofas have been added. My relationship to Kaare Klint’s designs hasn’t changed over the years. For a brief period, I thought the designs might have become a bit old-fashioned, but it was short-lived, and today, I'm glad I didn't act on it.
