Design in poetic genesis

The design studio EOOS sees design as a poetic discipline, where historical roots meet modern aesthetics

EOOS was founded in Vienna in 1995 by Martin Bergmann (b. 1963), Gernot Bohmann (b. 1968) and Harald Gründl (b. 1967), and is today considered one of Austria’s most successful design studios, known in particular for its poetic approach to design. By developing a unique method for their design process, they have created a series of industrial designs that have won global recognition.

The design trio calls this method Poetical Analysis®, a design process that involves analysing a theme from a contemporary perspective while at the same time studying its historical roots and examining relevant images, texts, myths and rituals in the human subconscious. A new project only takes shape once EOOS finds a word, phrase or an image that inspires them.

The idea for EOOS came about after the three industrial designers graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl come from very different parts of Austria, but teamed up after discovering they shared a common approach to design.

By uniting a mishmash of myths, rituals and intuitive expressions, they manage to put previous designs into a modern context. With their uncompromising approach, they have created a wide range of designs for some of the world’s largest design companies.

“We always try to look at the objects we design from every possible angle, and create something that stands out in every way, from the poetic starting point to its design, production, choice of materials, assembly, transport and cost,” says EOOS about their design process.

In addition to product and furniture design, EOOS also works with social and sustainable design, and has previously contributed to the Milan Triennial and the Venice Biennale. EOOS has published several design publications, and held solo exhibitions of the three designers’ works at MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.

EOOS has registered more than 15 technical patents and received over 170 international design awards, including the renowned Italian design award Compasso d’Oro, a string of Red Dot awards, iF design awards and several awards from the design magazine Wallpaper.
