Claus Bonderup & Torsten Thorup

Multi-talented designers with international appeal

Prolific Danish designers Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup have collaborated on everything from innovative lighting to international architecture.

After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen in 1969, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup began a collaboration that led them to join forces on design projects across the globe for more than 20 years.

As well as this longstanding collaboration, both Bonderup and Thorup worked independently with a

number of renowned design studios, including Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects.

In 1985, the pair established Torsten Thorup & Claus Bonderup Architects, completing many successful projects in the years that followed, including private residences, store interiors, hotels and housing

Bonderup and Thorup also turned their hands to watches, furniture, and a series of geometric-inspired pendant lamps, which Carl Hansen & Søn recently revived and added to our collection of modern classics. Throughout their joint career, the duo received numerous awards for their work, including the German Die Gute Industrieform award in 1974, the French Form Utile Design Prize in 1976 and the Nordic Design Prize in 1982.

The Arktikum Science Museum in Rovaniemi, Finland, is seen as one of the duo’s most important works.

In 1992, Thorup established his solo practice, resulting in a variety of internationally acclaimed projects ranging from high-rise offices in Kuwait to art museums in Scandinavia. Bonderup established his own architectural practice in 1993 and remains active within his field, both as an architect and a professor.
